Following nearly 450 poetic performances, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.browardschools.com\/cypressbay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cypress Bay High School<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>Lightning Poets\u2019 Society was named Team Champions while <strong>Parker Barry<\/strong>, a senior from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/welh.palmbeachschools.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wellington Community High School<\/strong><\/a><\/span> captured the \u201cIndy\u201d Poet Championship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dubbed the \u201cSuper Bowl of poetry,\u201d Louder Than a Bomb Florida, a <strong>Jason Taylor Foundation<\/strong> arts and education project as part of it\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/jasontaylorfoundation.com\/2024\/bluapple-poetry-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, is a festival featuring poetry bouts, workshops, exhibits, and ultimately the crowning of Florida\u2019s top youth spoken-word poetry team. The most critical component, however, is the year-round, meaningful instruction inside the classroom and after-school clubs, with teachers and teaching artists who create and facilitate a safe space for individual and collective expression.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year, as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the field of teams was reduced from a record 48 registered schools to the 32 that were represented in LTABFLA\u2019s first-ever virtual competition.\u00a0 Students submitted self-made videos of their poems that were played online for live judges with a live host, all in a digital environment that was streamed for participants, their teachers, and families to see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The team from Cypress Bay is led by <strong>Ms. Shawntee\u2019 Herring<\/strong>, an English and Creative Writing teacher at the Weston based high school. Poets representing <a href=\"https:\/\/brhs.palmbeachschools.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Boca Raton Community High School<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.browardschools.com\/flanagan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Charles W. Anna, a senior at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.browardschools.com\/stonemandouglas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, will have her chapbook of original poems, <em><strong>Venus of the Swamp<\/strong><\/em>, released during a celebratory event at the <strong>Ultimate studio blu<\/strong> in Weston later this year, and will participate in a number of philanthropic and performance opportunities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The South Florida Youth Poet Laureate competition is a collaboration between the Jason Taylor Foundation\u2019s Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urbanwordnyc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Urban Word<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, a New York-based literary arts education and youth development organization. Anna is now the fifth ever winner of the South Florida award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; padding-right: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;The South Florida Youth Poet Laureate program allows for the pen of a poet to outweigh the performance of a spoken word artist,\u201d <\/em>said Epiphany, bluapple Poetry Programs Coordinator.<em> \u201cThis program highlights the skill of these young wordsmiths and every year I am thoroughly impressed at how the voices of the young people are able to resonate with me and the panel of judges. At the end of the process, one Youth Poet Laureate and two Youth Poet Ambassadors were selected. This year, <strong>Tia Ebanks<\/strong>, a fifth grader at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.browardschools.com\/walker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Walker Elementary School<\/strong><\/a> in Ft. Lauderdale, was selected as the overall winner from more than 450 submissions.<\/p>\n<p>Participating schools received visits from bluapple Poetry Network staff and Teaching Artists, who lead students in writing workshops. Students were required to write a poem inspired by the prompt: The apple doesn\u2019t fall far from the tree; what kind of tree do I come from?<\/p>\n<p>Each school chose their top poems to represent them in the Grand Prize contest, and those students and their classmates were rewarded with a Hoffman\u2019s Chocolates \u201cSweet Ride Truck\u201d ice cream party. Hoffman\u2019s Chocolates also awarded the overall winning student from each school with their ideal custom caramel apple.
