That\u2019s one of the reasons why the LTABFLA College Slam is so important. On April 6, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barry.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barry University<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broward.edu\/Pages\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Broward College<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmuniv.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Florida Memorial University<\/span><\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> Florida International University<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">University of Central Florida<\/span><\/strong><\/a> all went to bout for the title of LTABFLA College Slam Champions as the slam moved from the individual competition it had been in the past to a face-off of college teams.<\/p>\n<p>Participants, many of whom were<a href=\"http:\/\/bluapplepoetry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> bluapple Poetry<\/span><\/strong><\/a> alum, provided an amazing night of poetry within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nova.edu\/community\/university-center.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Rick Case Arena at the Don Taft University Center in Nova Southeastern University<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. Ultimately, <strong>Barry University<\/strong>, perhaps better known by their team name the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ffwfoundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Florida Freedom Writers<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, became the third annual LTABFLA winners of the College Slam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[image src=&#8221;http:\/\/jasontaylorfoundation.com\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/C8xYmEvWsAAg4u8-600&#215;450.jpg&#8221; shape=&#8221;img-rounded&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ultimate Software Indy Finals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From prelims, to semis and everything in between, bluapple supplies a wide variety of styles and talent for the Indy competition as more than 350 individual poems are performed. On April 7, LTABFLA returned to the Rick Case Arena to watch the top twelve scoring individual poets compete during the Ultimate Software Indy Finals.<\/p>\n<p>With three different pieces presented from each poet, the judges had the difficult job of scoring each performance and ultimately deciding the first, second and third place winners. After a full night of story telling, <strong>Ni\u2019Ja \u201cSweetness\u201d Maxwell<\/strong> of<a href=\"http:\/\/northwesternbulls.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Miami Northwestern Senior High School<\/span><\/strong><\/a> came out as the Indy Finals champion, with <strong>Rachelle Newkirk<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miramarhs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Miramar High School<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Alexis Grant<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/piper.browardschools.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Piper High School<\/span><\/strong><\/a> claiming second and third place respectively.<\/p>\n<p>And while three poets claimed their prizes, all twelve of the amazing young artists wowed the crowed the entire evening. No audience member was more impressed than bluapple namesake,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.omarihardwick.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Omari Hardwick<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, who stepped off the set of his hit TV series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starz.com\/series\/power\/episodes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Power<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to support the poets.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[image src=&#8221;http:\/\/jasontaylorfoundation.com\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/C8217fFXgAAiWSN-600&#215;450.jpg&#8221; shape=&#8221;img-rounded&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>StevenDouglas Team Finals <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The last night of Louder Than A Bomb Florida Presented by Nova Southeastern University and UPS went out with a bang. On April 8, the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Epstein Center for the Arts at NSU<\/strong> <\/span>became a hub for raw emotions, story telling and connections between individuals of all ages, which was amplified as LTABFLA media partner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NBC-6<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, livestreamed the event on its website.<\/p>\n<p>The night was destined to be special after encouraging words from <strong>Jason Taylor<\/strong> and <strong>Omari Hardwick<\/strong>, and a masterful original poem read by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Darius_Daughtry?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Darius Daughtry<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Director of bluapple Poetry Programs. Throughout the evening, the crowd of more than 400 guests was also treated to performances by local musical artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexanderstar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Alexander Star<\/span> <\/strong><\/a>and internationally renowned poet,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sierrademulder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Sierra Demulder<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, who also served as one of five celebrity judges for the evening. The judges panel also included Miami Dolphins defensive back, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/2976316\/michael-thomas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Michael Thomas<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hits973.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Hits 97.3<\/strong><\/span><\/a> radio personality, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kimmyb973?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Kimmy Bell<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, School Board of Broward County Director of Equity and Attainment, <strong>David Watkins<\/strong>, and NSU Career Advisor and former Jason Taylor Foundation Director of Operations, <strong>Jackie Pires.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[image src=&#8221;http:\/\/jasontaylorfoundation.com\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/C9Ayu34XkAEsrdW-600&#215;398.jpg&#8221; shape=&#8221;img-rounded&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The buzz was certainly in the air, but the true stars of the evening, as expected, were the poets. After 13 days of preliminary bouts and semi-finals, four teams were left standing: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edline.net\/pages\/boca_raton_high_school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Boca Raton Community High School<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edline.net\/pages\/FlanaganHighSchool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Flanagan High School<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,<strong> Miami Norland Senior High School<\/strong> and<strong> Mirarmar High School.<\/strong> Round after round, the students brought intense and moving performances to the stage, bravely representing their teams, their schools and their communities. Nothing was held back.<\/p>\n<p>In another stunningly close bout, <strong>Miami Norland<\/strong>, or the <strong>Viking Freedom Writers<\/strong> as they like to be known, came out victorious as the third annual Louder Than a Bomb Florida Champions, earning the opportunity to travel to Chicago this July to participate in the<a href=\"http:\/\/youngchicagoauthors.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Young Chicago Authors<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u2019 spectacular \u201cWrite to the City\u201d summer camp for poets and writers. The placing of the other finalists was Boca, Miramar and Flanagan.<\/p>\n<p>As the mics are packed away and ideas for next year\u2019s competition begin to bloom, we know that the voices of these students, no matter where they place, are sewn together with the truth of their own lives. During a time that seems to thrive on uncertainty, there is a strong need for individuals and communities to understand one another and come together.
