Every Tuesday, the Jason Taylor Foundation dedicates the day to spotlighting an individual or organization that has supported its tireless efforts toward building a better future for South Florida’s children in need.
This week, the spotlight shines on one of our most popular annual programs, “Cool Gear for the School Year.”
Each year, the Jason Taylor Foundation hosts 60 underserved children from Miami-Dade and Broward Counties at Old Navy for a “back to school” shopping experience. This Labor Day, Monday, September 5, will mark the Foundation’s twelfth annual “Cool Gear for the School Year.”
During the event each child will be allotted $300 to spend on back to school gear. In addition to the monetary allowance, the children will receive assistance from Jason, along with current and former Miami Dolphins players, cheerleaders, and local celebrities. The purpose of the program is to help build self-esteem and eliminate unnecessary distractions to allow each child to focus on his or her studies, and not attire, during the school year.
Jason Weiss, a long-time supporter of the Jason Taylor Foundation and “Cool Gear for the School Year” in particular stated, “This is my favorite event that the Jason Taylor Foundation hosts. I began supporting the program in 2012 with my son, but now my entire family has become involved.”
Mr. Weiss and his family continue to support “Cool Gear” annually, underwriting the cost for at least two kids every year.
“This event shows my children how to do well for others and not to think solely about yourself,” continued Weiss. “This is such an amazing cause and you really see how your donation is put to use.”
Since 2005 the “Cool Gear for the School Year” program has provided more than $200,000 in clothing to nearly 700 deserving children! The Jason Taylor Foundation’s current goal is to raise $18,000 to provide this unique experience to 60 more of South Florida’s most deserving children.
